We do like our SciFi here, recently watching The Mandalorian and Grogu at the cinema and having a LOT of Star Wars stuff in our flat… so we approached Project Hail Mary expecting good things! Were we happy? Well yes and no…

The screenplay is taken from the 2021 book by Andy Weir and basically is another man saves humanity (plus other civilisations) feel good film. Of course, the man doesn’t want to save humanity, and of course, he finds himself along the way helped by his new best buddy, a creature he names Rocky! And this is where for me the film falls down, it is so much better after Rocky comes along and he makes the film. So the first half of this almost 2 and a half hour epic seems a bit flat compared to the second half, and I reckon they could trim a good 30 mins to make it a better film and an easier watch at around the 2 hour mark! So it’s a bit slow, it’s not exactly action packed, but it does work because of the whole premise of being stuck in space with nobody, until Rocky comes along, to talk to or interact with. The visuals are great, even the sound decent I just feel it could be shorter, more concise maybe more condensed but overall it’s a hit not a miss.
