I knew this was coming, and it has, to be frank, taken longer than I thought it would. The UK Government has announced that it is going to start a consultation on banning social media use for under 16’s. More worrying for me is that the government said that it expected schools to become phone free after this announcement – that is NEVER going to happen, there is literally zero chance parents and kids would go for that. That would literally make the law unenforceable, just like in reality like the OSA is currently. I’m really not sure this is the correct way to do it – surely the burden on enforcing things like this should be put on the social media companies who actively make billions each year rather than the users who are already under monetary pressures? Of course this will just push people underground, and into the rather murky waters of the dark web or just to make your average 15 yr old willing to break the law daily with his parents consent!
